Cuenca on foot: historic centre and river
The cathedral, squares and Tomebamba riverbanks make a starting point for a walk. Alternate monuments with neighbourhood and museum stops: the historic centre rewards several visits rather than one rushed circuit. Pumapungo offers another perspective on the city’s history.
Markets and makers
At Mercado 10 de Agosto, explore ingredients and dishes central to Cuenca’s cooking. Mote pillo is a good introduction to maize. Toquilla straw hats and the workshops of Gualaceo and Chordeleg broaden the craft experience; allow extra time for those excursions.
Cajas: choose an appropriate route
Lagoons, páramo and polylepis woodland shape the park’s scenery. Choose a walk to suit terrain, elevation and weather, with advice from park staff or a guide. Arrange return transport; a spell of clear weather does not replace route planning.
Three days, with Ingapirca if you stay longer
One balanced suggestion is a day in the centre, a day in Cajas and a day for markets, museums or workshops. Keep the days interchangeable according to weather and opening hours. Ingapirca lies in neighbouring Cañar: add a dedicated day rather than combining it with Cajas.
