What to discover
Zaruma and Buenaventura offer different experiences: urban and mining history, and nature observation.
Heritage and traditions
Tigrillo and agricultural produce introduce local cooking. Mining history also deserves attention to its present-day effects.
A suggested stay
For a future visit, separate stops and confirm transfers instead of combining town, mine and reserve in a day.
Plan this stop
Consult travel advice. Check permitted access in Zaruma; a former mine is not necessarily open to visitors.
Places, celebrations and crafts
Yacuviña, an archaeological stop
Yacuviña adds an archaeological dimension to a journey through El Oro. Take time to observe the landscape and remains, complementing Zaruma’s urban heritage. Enquire locally about visiting arrangements and guides before organising the journey.
Cerro de Arcos, between El Oro and Loja
The rock formations of Cerro de Arcos create natural arches and passages in Ecuador’s southern highlands. The area can also be approached from Manú in Loja province. Allow a dedicated excursion and confirm your starting point: this mountain journey is more than a quick stop from Zaruma.

What to book or arrange
For mangrove or island outings, confirm boarding and times with the provider. In Zaruma, arrange guided visits or workshops.
Local food to try

Tigrillo combines green plantain, eggs and cheese and is closely associated with Zaruma. Caldo de bolas is a broth served with large stuffed plantain dumplings.
