Visit Cotopaxi: the volcano, Quilotoa and Latacunga

The volcano draws the eye, but the province also unfolds through villages, markets and celebrations. Latacunga is a starting point for a stay combining landscape and culture.

What to discover

Choose a day in Cotopaxi National Park’s landscapes or a stop around Quilotoa, or allow several days for both. A lakeside walk, a crater descent and a summit climb involve very different commitments. Define the route before booking.

Heritage and traditions

Mama Negra is a major expression of Latacunga’s intangible heritage. Learning about its organisers and different celebrations helps put it in context. Chugchucaras and Salcedo’s ice creams provide two further introductions to the province.

A suggested stay

Combine time in Latacunga with a landscape day. With longer available, continue through villages around Quilotoa and meet local makers. Staying overnight avoids turning the province into one long return excursion.

Plan this stop

Volcanic areas and trail access can change. Confirm the permitted route, equipment and return transport with the park or guide. Check the year’s festival programme before choosing dates.

Places, celebrations and crafts

Pujilí and the dances of Corpus Christi

The Octavas del Corpus Christi festivities make Pujilí a cultural destination in its own right. The Danzante, wearing an elaborately decorated costume, is an emblematic figure. Music, dance and religious practices meet in this living tradition; check the local calendar, as dates change each year.

Two Mama Negra celebrations

In Latacunga, September celebrations are rooted in devotion to the Virgin of La Merced and the communities of the markets. The November celebration has a civic character linked to the city’s independence festivities. These are distinct occasions: choose the one you wish to experience, then confirm the parade date.

Practical information

When to go

June to September is generally drier in the Andes. Nights remain cool and mountain weather can change quickly. Outside this period, keep mountain outings flexible.

What to book or arrange

Book a qualified guide for technical high-altitude outings. For Quilotoa and nearby villages, confirm accommodation and transfers, especially on weekends and holidays.
