Find your way around the province
- Quito
- Cayambe
- Mindo
What to discover
In Quito, start with Plaza Grande and Plaza San Francisco, then choose a museum instead of rushing through every monument. Mitad del Mundo offers another introduction to Ecuador’s geography and provinces. Give Mindo its own stop so you have time to watch the forest: birds do not follow a visitor timetable.
Heritage and traditions
Quito’s markets introduce everyday cooking and produce from different regions. Try potato locro or a quimbolito, then discover bizcochos in Cayambe. Asking how a dish is made can open a richer conversation than looking for a supposedly definitive recipe.

A suggested stay
Spend two days in Quito, then choose Mindo for the forest or Cayambe on the way towards Otavalo. Avoid combining both excursions in one day: they serve different interests and lie in different directions.
Plan this stop
Plan transport around individual neighbourhoods and stops. Before a forest walk, ask your guide about duration, terrain and weather. Check museum opening hours and access directly with the places you intend to visit.

Practical information
When to go
June to September is generally drier in the Andes. Nights remain cool and mountain weather can change quickly. Outside this period, keep mountain outings flexible. Lower and more humid Mindo can receive rain throughout the year.
What to book or arrange
In Mindo, arrange early birdwatching and private visits ahead. In Quito, book workshops or guided visits with fixed time slots.
Local food to try

Try locro de papa, a thick potato soup often served with cheese and avocado. In Cayambe, crumbly savoury bizcochos are paired with fresh cheese.

Cabins and glamping in Mindo
A cabin among the trees or a glamping stay can extend your time in Mindo’s cloud forest. Choose a location that fits your plans: village access, trails, birdwatching and waterfalls. Before booking, compare access, included meals, bathroom facilities and protection from damp weather.
