Visit Otavalo and Lake San Pablo: markets, crafts and stays

Combine Otavalo’s markets, Peguche’s craft traditions and time by Lake San Pablo, looking beyond a single market visit.

The market: look, talk and choose

Compare materials, finishes and where objects were made. Markets bring together a varied range: ask what the seller or their workshop produced. To understand a technique, complement shopping with an artisan visit rather than expecting stalls to tell the whole story.

Peguche: waterfall and craft

The waterfall offers a nature stop, while textile and musical traditions give Peguche another dimension. Contact a workshop to ask about demonstrations. Arrangements vary: an open shop does not mean an artisan is always available to explain their work.

Lake San Pablo and places to stay

The lakeshore invites a longer stay. When comparing cabins or glamping, distinguish a lake view from direct water access. Check meals, transport and the activities actually offered. Water outings need confirmation according to conditions, separate from the room booking.

A two-day route

Our suggestion: Otavalo and a workshop on day one, then Peguche and the lake on day two, depending on appointments. Try fritada or seasonal market produce. If adding Cuicocha, give it a separate outing instead of packing more transfers into the same day.
