What to discover
Plaza de los Ponchos is a starting point, not the whole destination. Pair it with a workshop that welcomes visitors, then choose Peguche, Lake San Pablo or Cuicocha. Each offers a different way to experience the landscape.
Heritage and traditions
Textile heritage is living work. Ask about fibres, techniques and the people making each piece: not everything sold at a market is woven locally. Approach celebrations such as Inti Raymi through their organisers, without assuming every ceremony is open to visitors.

A suggested stay
Allow a day for Otavalo and local crafts, then another for a lake or village. Ibarra and its helados de paila can extend the route. The market deserves more than a brief stop between transfers.
Plan this stop
Ask permission before photographing people or workshops. Confirm visits and any fees with the makers. At Cuicocha, choose a walk suited to conditions and your pace rather than automatically planning the complete circuit.
Places, celebrations and crafts
Zuleta, thread and embroidery
Around Zuleta, hand embroidery decorates clothing and household linens. A workshop visit offers a closer look at patterns, precise stitches and the time behind each piece. When choosing a souvenir, talk to the person who made it.
Peguche beyond the waterfall
Peguche also deserves a stop for its textile and musical traditions. Seek out workshops where artisans explain their work and ask how pieces are made: techniques and production methods vary. The visit complements Otavalo’s market and a quiet stop by Lake San Pablo.

Practical information
When to go
June to September is generally drier in the Andes. Nights remain cool and mountain weather can change quickly. Outside this period, keep mountain outings flexible.
What to book or arrange
Contact textile workshops for demonstrations and arrange a guide for lake hikes. At San Pablo, confirm water activities and the day’s conditions directly.
Local food to try

Fritada is pork cooked and then browned, often accompanied by mote maize. In Ibarra, helados de paila are fruit ices made in a metal bowl cooled with ice.
Cabins and glamping at Lake San Pablo
Lake San Pablo is a scenic place to look for a cabin or glamping stay near Otavalo, with Imbabura volcano in the background. Check the views, actual lake access and insulation for cool nights. It makes a base for combining Otavalo, Peguche and lakeside walks.
